UMa Contemporary Dance Showcase 2014 – Part 1

UMa Dance Company presents its Contemporary Dance Showcase 2014, at the University of Malaya Experimental Theatre, featuring 5 new choreographies, a Malaysian premiere, and a reimagining of a beloved work from UMa Dance’s repertoire. Of the 5 new works is a special commission by Jack Kek, formerly of Cloudgate II, Taiwan, and BOH Cameronian awardee for best featured performer in 2006.

UMa Dance Company is the resident contemporary dance company of the Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya, providing a platform for performance and production for its dance majors. The production is run almost entirely by a student committee, only guided and encouraged by their lecturers, from scheduling rehearsals to costume arrangements to ticket printing to public relations. The students of Choreography 2 are presenting a work about society’s unfair expectations of women, without resorting to text that is miserably heavy or preachy. The premiere of the work at the showcase serves as their term’s final project.
